Dustin Jorgenson
has been working full-time for his family’s business since July of 1992. He has
consistently been named the top salesman for many years. Dustin Jorgenson
understands the importance of being able to work effectively with family in a
family run business. Here, he offers some tips on how to keep family relations
in tact while also operating a successful business. Dustin Jorgenson understands that
while many of the business principles on the global scale are applicable to the
family owned business, there are some major differences.
One of the main differences that Dustin Jorgenson sees
when working with a family business as opposed to a national company is that it
is personal. Dustin Jorgenson recommends
that you have very clearly defined roles for each family member who is active
in the business. Having duties spelled out can help prevent arguments over who
was supposed to handle what part of a project. You cannot fire your mother or
sister and then expect to have a peaceful family holiday meal a few days later.
Dustin Jorgenson also recommends that you have outside
auditors go over all aspects of the business every year to make sure that the
salaries you are offering are competitive and that all employees, regardless of
whether or not they are family, are treated equally. Favoritism is many times a
complaint of non-family members who are working in family owned businesses, and
Dustin Jorgenson recommends that any issues be dealt with quickly so resentment
cannot build.
